Why Are We Called Jeito Collaborative?
“Maximum jeito, that’s what you need, maximum jeito,” said Christoph earnestly to me in the spring of 2000. I didn’t realize it then, but those eight words would shape the rest of my life.
I met Christoph on a trip designed to educate policy-makers and funders about progressive mass-transit systems in Brazil. Christoph was our “fixer,” and I was support staff for the content experts on the tour.
I had no way of knowing that this trip would change my life. I am still seeking my maximum jeito, and the journey will continue until the end of my life.
In an earlier incarnation, Christoph was an investment banker. He left that industry to become a pioneer in ecotourism in Brazil. He continues to work to conserve the Atlantic rainforest in Brazil, working with biologists and artists to raise awareness about the incredible biodiversity in that forest.
Throughout the trip, Christoph and I often found ourselves in deep conversations on the sidelines of meetings, discussing everything from career ambitions to personal fulfillment. I was too unsavvy to know what was happening at the time, but he was coaching me. He was trying to help me understand my motives, my joy, and my goals.
Jeito is a versatile Portuguese word with many uses, but at its core, jeito means finding a way, your way. This way is made up of many things — finding your own way of doing things, using creativity, and maybe using some unconventional methods to achieve your goals, as well as skill, aptness, and knack. It also incorporates the importance of relationships into your ability to get things done. Finally, it is about setting oneself up for success. For Christoph, and for me, it is also about achievement and giving back.
Let Jeito Collaborative help you discover your maximum jeito.
